Memphis Field Investigation and Claim Documentation
Memphis moves freight by road, rail, river and air, and its claims reflect that. Delator Claims Division sends licensed Tennessee private investigators to record scenes, vehicles, cargo and property damage throughout the city for carriers, counsel, fleets and individual claimants.

Field documentation in Memphis
Freight defines much of the Memphis claim environment. Tractor-trailers leave the intermodal yards and warehouse districts along Lamar Avenue, cross the Mississippi on two interstate bridges and circulate around the airport cargo area at all hours. A collision involving a commercial vehicle here often has several interested parties: the motor carrier, the shipper, a cargo insurer and the other driver. Each of them benefits from a clear physical record made before the scene changes.
The city also has an old tree canopy, flat terrain that drains slowly and a climate that delivers strong thunderstorms and occasional ice. Property claims after a wind event can number in the hundreds across a few neighborhoods. Our role for owners and claimants is to document what is there. Coverage, value and cause are left to those with the authority to decide them.
River crossings, the loop and freight arterials
- I-40 and the Hernando de Soto Bridge
- The northern river crossing into Arkansas, carrying long-haul truck traffic past downtown and across the north side of the city toward Nashville.
- I-55 and the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge
- The older crossing south of downtown, where I-55 traffic from Arkansas and Mississippi funnels through a constrained interchange near the riverfront.
- I-240 loop
- The urban freeway around the south and east sides of the city, connecting the airport area, the Poplar corridor and both through interstates.
- Lamar Avenue (US 78)
- A surface freight corridor running southeast toward Mississippi, lined with truck terminals, warehouses and intermodal access, with heavy trucks mixing with local traffic.
- Poplar Avenue (US 72)
- The main east-west arterial from Midtown through East Memphis toward Germantown, with dense office, retail and medical frontage and many signalized intersections.
- Elvis Presley Boulevard (US 51)
- A commercial route through Whitehaven that passes Graceland, combining visitor traffic, tour buses and neighborhood retail driveways.
A logistics city on a river bluff
Memphis International Airport and its air cargo hub occupy a large area on the south side, surrounded by distribution centers, truck yards and parcel facilities. A rail intermodal yard sits near Lamar Avenue and Shelby Drive, and President's Island on the Mississippi holds port and heavy industrial operations. These districts generate dock, yard and cargo claims as well as roadway collisions, and many of the incidents occur on private property with no police report.
Downtown sits on a bluff above the Mississippi, with Beale Street, the riverfront and arena events drawing pedestrians at night. The Medical District lies just east, followed by Midtown and the University of Memphis area. The Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek cross the city and back up in heavy rain. The terrain is flat, mature hardwoods overhang streets and roofs in older neighborhoods, and severe thunderstorms with straight-line wind are a regular source of property loss.
What Memphis geography sends to a claim file
- Tractor-trailer collisions on Lamar Avenue and near intermodal gates, where truck turning paths, signal timing and driveway geometry are disputed.
- Cargo damage and shortage claims arising at warehouses and cross-docks in the airport district, needing condition photographs before freight is reworked.
- Fallen-tree and wind damage to roofs, vehicles and fences in Midtown and East Memphis neighborhoods after severe thunderstorms or ice.
- Hit-and-run and uninsured motorist claims on arterials such as Poplar Avenue, where a camera canvass may be the only source of identification.
- Multi-vehicle crashes on the I-240 loop and at the bridge approaches, where lane drops and merges compress traffic.
Illustrative scenarios, not actual cases
- Trailer strike at a warehouse gate off Lamar
- A tractor-trailer turning into a distribution yard clips a passenger car waiting to exit. An investigator measures the driveway throat, photographs curb scuffs and tire marks, and records the position of the guard shack cameras.
- Oak across a Midtown roof
- A large limb comes down on a house and a parked car during a summer storm. The owner asks for neutral photographs of the tree, the break point, the roof and the vehicle before removal crews arrive.
- Pallets rejected at an airport-area dock
- A receiver refuses a shipment for crushed cartons. Before the freight is restacked, an investigator photographs each pallet, the wrap, the trailer floor and load bars, and records seal and trailer numbers for the cargo insurer.
These examples are hypothetical and are included to show where field documentation is typically requested.

Questions about coverage in Memphis
Can you document a scene inside a private truck yard or warehouse?
Yes, when the party that controls the property grants access or the requesting party arranges it. We do not enter private property without permission. If access is refused, the investigator documents what is visible from public areas and records the refusal and the time in the field notes.
Do you cross the river for claims that happened in Arkansas or go into Mississippi?
No. Delator Group is licensed in Tennessee, and the division's coverage is the 95 Tennessee counties. For a collision on a bridge approach or near the state line, we document the Tennessee side. Requesting parties with a loss located in another state will need a provider licensed there.
After a large storm, how quickly can an investigator reach a Memphis property?
Memphis is an anchor area with a typical on-scene time under 60 minutes, and dispatch runs 24 hours a day. After a widespread event, road closures and downed lines can slow travel. Emergency assignments are scheduled for arrival within 30 minutes to four hours.
Can a cargo insurer and a motor carrier both receive the same documentation?
Documentation is delivered to the party that requested it. That party decides who else receives it. On a neutral assignment the photographs and field notes record physical conditions only, so the same record can be shared with several interested parties if the requester chooses to do so.

On this assignment Delator field personnel record what is physically present: photographs, video, measurements and factual notes. They do not adjust, appraise or value the loss, do not determine coverage, cause or fault, and do not represent any party to the claim.
Delator Claims Division is not a law firm, an insurer or an engineering firm, and nothing on this page is legal advice.
