Overview

Field documentation in Montgomery County

Clarksville is the only incorporated city in Montgomery County, but the county extends well past the city limits. Woodlawn lies to the west along the road to Dover, Cunningham and Southside to the south, Palmyra along the Cumberland River to the southwest, and Sango and the Port Royal area to the east. Much of that land is farm country reached by two-lane state routes and county roads.

The military presence shapes who is involved in claims. Drivers and vehicle owners are frequently reassigned or deployed after a loss, and adjusters and attorneys in other states end up handling files for a scene they cannot visit. A prompt field record reduces the reliance on memory later. For claimants and policyholders the division's role is neutral documentation only, without advice, valuation or any determination of fault.

Roads and corridors

Highways and county routes

I-24
Crosses the county's northeast side from the Kentucky line toward Nashville, with exits serving Clarksville, the industrial area and Sango, and steady long-haul truck traffic.
US 41A (Fort Campbell Boulevard)
A wide commercial arterial running from the Kentucky line and the post gates through Clarksville, then southeast through Sango toward Cheatham County.
US 79
Runs northeast toward Guthrie, Kentucky as Wilma Rudolph Boulevard and Guthrie Highway, and west as Dover Road through Woodlawn toward Stewart County.
SR 13 / SR 48
Two-lane highways heading south from Clarksville across the Cumberland River toward Cunningham and Dickson County, through rolling farmland and wooded hills.
SR 374 (101st Airborne Division Parkway)
A partial loop around the north and east sides of Clarksville connecting Fort Campbell Boulevard with the Wilma Rudolph Boulevard area.
SR 12 (Ashland City Road)
A two-lane route following the Cumberland River valley southeast toward Cheatham County, with curves, bluffs and limited shoulders.
Local environment

Two rivers, a state line and open farmland

The Cumberland River and the Red River meet at Clarksville, and both have cut bluffs and bottomland through the county. River-bottom fields and low roads flood in wet seasons. South of the Cumberland the terrain becomes hillier and more wooded around Cunningham, Southside and Palmyra, with winding roads and long distances between crossroads. North of the city the land is flatter and open, planted in row crops and tobacco, with farm equipment using the highways during planting and harvest.

Industrial development is concentrated on the northeast side near I-24, where manufacturing plants and distribution buildings generate truck traffic on the roads connecting to the interstate. Retail is concentrated along Wilma Rudolph Boulevard and Fort Campbell Boulevard. The underlying limestone produces sinkholes and caves in places. The Kentucky line runs along the county's northern edge, so a collision location near Fort Campbell or Guthrie sometimes has to be confirmed as being in Tennessee.

Claim types

Claims we are asked to document here

  • Collisions involving service members who relocate or deploy afterward, where the scene must be recorded while the participants are still available.
  • Truck and passenger-vehicle crashes on I-24 near the Kentucky line and at the exits serving the industrial area.
  • Rural two-lane crashes on Dover Road, SR 13, SR 48 and SR 12, involving curves, hills, farm equipment and deer.
  • Uninsured and out-of-state motorist claims in which the other driver's insurer, registration and residence are in another state.
  • Sinkhole-related, flood and storm damage to homes in the county's many newer subdivisions and to rural properties near the rivers.
Illustrative examples

Three hypothetical assignments

Crash before a change of station
A soldier's car is struck at an intersection off Fort Campbell Boulevard two weeks before the family moves. An investigator documents the intersection, signal heads, lane markings and the damaged vehicle so the record exists after they leave Tennessee.
Combine on Guthrie Highway
A passing vehicle sideswipes a combine moving between fields at dusk. The investigator documents the equipment's width, lighting and markings, the lane and shoulder widths, and the passing-zone markings at the point of contact.
Curve departure on Ashland City Road
A pickup leaves SR 12 on a curve above the river and strikes a tree. The path through the shoulder, tire marks, the tree strike height and the curve's warning signs are photographed and measured.

These examples are hypothetical and are included to show where field documentation is typically requested.

Deployment

Coverage and response in Montgomery County

Montgomery County is an anchor county for the division, with established field presence in the Clarksville area and a typical on-scene time under 60 minutes. Woodlawn, Cunningham, Southside, Palmyra and Sango are served by the same licensed investigators. Delator Group is based in Nashville and has no office in Montgomery County. Dispatch operates 24/7/365 through the Delator Field Services network, and every address in the county falls under the four-hour statewide deployment guarantee.

Questions

Questions about coverage in Montgomery County

Can you document a collision that happened on Fort Campbell itself?

Access to a military installation is controlled by the installation, and investigators do not enter without authorization. Roads and intersections outside the gates are documented in the usual way. A vehicle involved in an on-post collision can be documented wherever it is stored off post, if access is arranged.

What if the crash was right at the Kentucky line?

The division documents scenes in Tennessee. Where the location is uncertain, the investigator records the physical position relative to state line signs, mile markers and other fixed references. Which state's law or courts apply is a legal question the division does not answer.

I am being reassigned out of state. Can documentation be done before I leave?

Yes. Rush and Emergency tiers exist for situations where time is short. The scene and the vehicle can be documented and the photographs, video, measurements and notes delivered securely, typically the same day, so you have the record regardless of where you are later.

Do you reach the southern end of the county past the Cumberland River?

Yes. Cunningham, Southside, Palmyra and the rural roads toward Dickson and Houston counties are all served. Those locations are farther from Clarksville, so dispatch provides a time estimate for the specific address when the request is made.

Scope of workDocumentation only

On this assignment Delator field personnel record what is physically present: photographs, video, measurements and factual notes. They do not adjust, appraise or value the loss, do not determine coverage, cause or fault, and do not represent any party to the claim.

Delator Claims Division is not a law firm, an insurer or an engineering firm, and nothing on this page is legal advice.
